Input cost and storage losses affect market.

POTATO prices in Azerbaijan have risen sharply recently, along with those of tomatoes and onions.

Growers attribute the price increase to the sharp rise in the cost of fertilisers and nitrates since the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out.

However there is also believed to be an artificial increase in prices owing to "backroom deals" between entrepreneurs and an impact from poor storage conditions causing product waste.

In addition, because of a decrease in the production of potatoes, the country has become dependent on imports, which has bumped up prices.
