Drivers shortage
A SHORTAGE of HGV drivers in the UK has been created by a number of issues from new IR-35 changes, and the impact this has had on agency and sub-contractors, to a reduction in the availability of non-UK national labour created by a combination of Brexit and travel restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.
There is a shortage of 76,000 HGV drivers in the UK, according to a report from ITV in 2020. This figure had grown from 59,000 in 2019 - showing the ever-growing demand for qualified truck drivers, who are desperately needed to keep goods moving across the UK and Europe.
This is making its mark on all supply chains and storage sectors, including the potato and carrot industries.
